Why is it Important to have Boundaries during the Holidays?
This time of year can get extremely busy so you need to make sure to protect your peace. When we get busy and do not have boundaries it is hard to keep our peace because we over-pack our schedule. Resting and slowing down this time of year is okay! I know you might not hear that from many people, but it is okay to remove things from your schedule, so you have a less busy holiday season.
Why do we feel like we can’t rest?
Often, we over-commit to things. We say yes to so much and forget to add our calendar to the planning process. We want to please everyone and are scared to say no so we continue to add things to our already busy schedule. During this time of year, we often feel a lot of pressure to meet high expectations, so we forget to take time to rest because we have way too much to do.
Perfectionism can cause us not to rest. If you think you cannot rest until everything is perfect, you will never have time to rest. None of these are valid reasons not to rest! Rest is important so that you do not get overworked this holiday season. Psalm 62:5 reminds us to lay this time of year at God’s feet. All the things we need to do can be left at God’s feet because we need to take time to rest. He will help us to get things done.
How to Set Boundaries?
Decide what matters most.
Pick out what is the most important and add it to your schedule, so you do not miss out. Make a list from most important to least and don’t do the things that are the least important. To show up as your best self you will have to pick and choose.
Practice saying no with grace.
Just because you have to say no doesn’t mean that you must be rude about it. Be polite when declining invites to things. People will understand that you cannot make it to everything. If you feel bad and want to get together with that person later, make sure to mention it!
Schedule time for rest.
If you do not schedule it, then you might forget to do it. Often, we overbook our calendar so anything important needs to be scheduled and that means your rest! Take time to mark off days or times when you will be taking time to rest and spend time with God.
Set limits on holiday spending.
Finances can cause a lot of stress and anxiety during the holiday season. To prevent this anxiety and stress make sure to set a reasonable budget for your holiday spending. If you do not have much to work with, try making people something or just not giving gifts. The holidays are not about gifts but about family, friends, and Jesus.
Make time for God.
Jesus is the reason for the season. Do not forget to make time for God during the holidays. The best way to keep your peace this holiday season is by centering yourself with God. Continue to do your daily quiet time with the Lord. If you do not currently have a daily quiet time with the Lord, this is the perfect time to start!
Truly enjoy the holidays by keeping your peace. Use these steps to make sure that you do not get overwhelmed these next couple of months with the holidays. Yes, this time of year can be joyful, but it can also be stressful. Make sure to bring God into all you do this time of year and take time to rest, and this will be a good holiday season!
