5 Ways to Improve your Quiet Time with God

Get comfy

Getting comfortable ensures that your quiet time with God does not feel like a chore or a burden. For me it just feels like spending time with a close friend because I am not worried about my appearance. My main concern when spending time with God where my mind and emotions are that day. I tend to do my quiet time in my pajamas and wrap myself in the quilt that lays snug on our couch each morning. Where I enjoy my time with God is on the couch near a window so I can see the sunrise and also be sitting comfortably. If you take time to find a spot you love with in your house it will make it easier to concentrate and more fulfillments will come from it.

Have your bible supplies easily accessible

I find it easier to spend time with God and in my Bible if I leave it accessible. It’s amazing how much walking up the stairs can affect my will to do my Bible study each morning or afternoon. Instead of keeping my Bible study supplies upstairs in my office all neat and organized I fight the temptation to put it away and leave it accessible near my quiet time spot. That way I see it and it reminds me to spend time with God. It also makes it less likely for me to skip because I know where everything is and I won’t have to dig around for it. After finding a quiet time spot pick a place to set your stuff that is near it after you are finished so that tomorrow you are more willing to spend time with God.

Put away distractions

I try my best to keep my quiet time spot nice and tidy otherwise I will get distracted and think of all that needs cleaned and picked up around me. I also put my phone on “do not disturb” because I enjoy listening to worship music on it while I pray. If this is still too distracting leave your phone in the next room. This time should be solely for the Lord. I also try my best to do it in the morning while the world sleeps. Starting in the morning comforts me more because most of the world is still fast asleep and many will not need me yet. Find a time for you that works the best and make sure to look for ways to stay focused. God deserves so much more time than we give Him and the best way to spend quality time with someone is by putting away distractions.

Find the way that you worship best

I have built a routine that I follow that helps me worship. I start with a gratitude reading, followed by writing in my prayer journal and listening to worship music. Then I do a quick devotional to wake my brain and finish up with reading a section of the Bible. I start my quiet time with music in the background but then I must shut it off when I read the word. Find what works best for you. I like to spend immense time in prayer some days and other days bible passages excite me and make me want to read. I know I worship best when I start with gratitude because it reminds me what good things the Lord has done for me it gets me in a grateful heart and makes me more excited to spend time with God. Find what works for you and what brings you closer to God. Not everyone’s time will look the same, but the important part is that you take the time to grow closer to Him.

Talk to God

Always take time to talk to God. Most days I prefer to write my prayers down it keeps me focused, but other days I need to pray aloud over everything and everyone that is on my mind. No matter the way you pray in a prayer journal, aloud, or in your head it is so important to include prayer in your quiet time with God. In order to truly know someone, it takes talking to them so to know and understand God you must talk to Him and ask Him for the knowledge and wisdom to do so.
